Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Monday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Hong Kong and flat start in Australia. Japan closed for public holiday after Nikkei futures strengthened Friday night. S&P 500 futures unchanged after US indexes logged big weekly gains. Australian bonds little changed after Treasuries weakened across the curve Friday. FX markets steady. Gold pulling back with White House to clarify tariff situation. Crude weakening. Bitcoin rallying towards two-week high.
US signaling China may be sanctioned over its Russian crude purchases after India was hit by 25% tariffs last week. VP Vance confirmed administration weighing whether to impose secondary tariffs on China, at same as White House expected to extend 12-Aug tariff deadline. However, both China and India striking defiant stance with China saying energy policy to be determined by its national interests. India reaffirmed Moscow ties after PM Modi invited Putin to India later this year.
China deflation pressures persisted in July with consumer prices failing to grow while factory-gate deflation did not improve as forecast, Figures seen underlining persistent domestic economic weakness exacerbated by trade uncertainty, extreme weather last month and prolonged housing slump. There has been some hope anti-involution policy aimed at curbing overcapacity will begin exerting reflationary effects. However, recovery in domestic demand still seen as main prerequisite to ending deflation.
China keeping up scrutiny of Nvidia's (NVDA) H20 chips with state media again expressing concerns about potential security risks. Comes as press sources note US has begun issuing export licenses for H20s while NVDA to hand US government 15% of those revenues. Meanwhile, China wanting US to extend loosening of export controls to HBM chips. Developments occurring against backdrop of trade talks with US expected to extend 12-Aug tariff deadline. However, Treasury Secretary Bessent acknowledged talks with China "difficult."
Big week coming up. US July CPI (Tues) forecast to show further tariff-induced pickup in core inflation as markets dial up rate cut bets amid Fed focus on labor market. RBA (Tues) expected to cut cash rate by 25 bp. China industrial production, retail sales, and fixed asset investment growth (Fri) forecast to have slowed following surprise manufacturing PMI contraction. Japan preliminary Q2 GDP (Fri) forecast to show mild rebound from Q1's contraction. Earnings season continues with China tech and retail firms reporting.
