StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +1.10%, Hang Seng Futures (0.54%), ASX SPI 200 (0.15%), S&P Futures (0.01%)

Aug 11 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian market set for mixed start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan (market was closed Monday for public holiday), and negative starts in Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures flat following quiet Monday session as markets await US CPI. Australian bonds little changed ahead of RBA meeting. Treasuries also quiet on Monday. FX markets steady after dollar index logged small gain. Crude steady while gold nursing losses after Trump confirmed bullion would not be tariffed. Bitcoin unchanged near two-week high.

    • Press sources noted President Trump signed executive order extending China tariff truce by another 90 days. Move was widely expected as two sides attempt to make further progress towards trade deal. However, press have also discussed familiar roadblocks over issues such as fentanyl, rare earths, China's economic practices and export controls. On latter, Trump suggested he could allow sales of downgraded version of NVDA Blackwell chips to China. Trump also confirmed deal with NVDA allowing H20 export licenses in return for cut of sales.

    • RBA expected to cut cash rate by 25 bp to 3.60% at Tuesday's meeting. Rate cut expectations crystalized by softer-than-expected Q2 CPI showing disinflation tracking RBA's forecasts. RBA's characterization of policy as restrictive seen conveying scope for further easing, through rate cut expectations beyond August somewhat uncertain with Governor Bullock seen pushing back against dovish market expectations while maintaining cautious and data-dependent stance. Markets fully pricing in another rate cut after August.

    • US July CPI forecast to show further tariff-induced pickup in core inflation to highest since early 2025, reflecting goods cost pass-through. However, there remains ongoing debate over extent this will continue to play out and some Fed officials anticipate tariff inflation impact to dissipate. Some economists have played down inflation input relative to toward labor market following weak July payrolls print. Dovish-leaning Fedspeak has also focused more on labor side weakness, firming expectations of at least two rate cuts by year-end.
