Synopsis:
European indices ended mostly higher. Follows mixed performance on Monday. Germany exception to the firmer trend. In sectors, energy, industrials, travel/leisure and autos biggest gainers, while tech, media and financial services main laggards.
In trade developments, US President Trump signed executive order extending China tariff truce by another 90 days, as widely expected. Very quiet elsewhere. On the macro front, UK labor market data showed ongoing slowdown in employment, but wages holding up. July claimant count down 6.2K versus consensus for 20.8K increase and prior 15.5K drop revised down sharply after 25.9K gain initially reported. Market likely to discount reading given ongoing volatility in updates. However, payrolled employees fell 8K on the month less than 20K drop expected and compared with prior 26K fall revised from 41K drop. Average weekly earnings excluding bonus remained at 5.0%, as expected. The British Retail Consortium retail sales measure showed a rise in July sales with total sales increased by 2.5% y/y vs 12-month average of 1.9%. Note prior reading in June saw 3.1% y/y increase amid hot weather, which was also influential in July. Breakdown showed 3.9% y/y gain in food sales versus 12-month average of 3.2% and non-food sales up 1.4% versus average of 0.8%. Also, some focus on German ZEW sentiment Indicator deteriorating sharply in August to 34.7 vs consensus 39.7 and prior 52.7 along with big drop in ZEW Current Situation (68.6) vs consensus (65.0) and prior (59.5), as EU-US trade deal concerns became reality.
On the corporate news flow, on the earnings front, out of DACHS, Hannover Re (HNR1.GR), K+S (SDF.GR) and Tecan Group (TECN.SW) update investors. In the UK, Bellway (BWY.LN), Spirax Group (SPX.LN) and Entain (ENT.LN) are among other names from the region to issue updates. Elsewhere, ISS A/S (ISS.DC) released in-line H1 numbers and reaffirmed FY25 outlook for all three KPIs; group also increased its share buyback program by DKK500M.
Little of note in M&A headlines; QinetiQ Group (QQ.LN) sold its non-core Federal IT Services business to V2X for an EV consideration of $31M and Wilmington (WIL.LN) agreed to acquire Conversia from Arraigo Midco, S.L. for a cash consideration of €121.6M. In other headlines, Goldman Sachs said on Monday an investor planned to sell ~16M shares in UBS Group (UBSG.SW), with the offer being fully subscribed.
Looking ahead to tomorrow's EU econ-calendar, notable releases will include, amongst others, Germany Jul final CPI and Spain Jul final CPI.
