Asian markets set for negative start to Monday trade. Japan and Australia tracking for opening declines while Hong Kong set for flat start. S&P 500 futures up slightly after US indexes logged another positive week. Australian bonds under pressure, tracking Treasury curve steepening on Friday. FX markets steady after dollar saw broad weekly decline on major crosses. Crude and gold sustaining mild early losses. Bitcoin up from earlier lows after pulling back sharply from last week's record high.
Jackson Hole Symposium kicks offFriday with attention largely on Fed Chair Powell (Fri) amid thoughts remarks will lean dovish. Across Asia, RBNZ expected to reduce OCR by 25 bp with New Zealand inflation and employment subdued. China expected to keep loan prime rates unchanged. Bank Indonesia (Wed) also expected to leave policy unchanged. Flash PMIs to update extent of tariff-related manufacturing weakness this month. Japan nationwide CPI expected to show core inflation eased last month. Earnings continue to headline corporate activity.
Geopolitics leading press headlines ahead of Zelensky's meeting with Trump on Monday. Takeaways from Trump-Putin meeting on Friday highlighted failure to agree on halting war and concerns about Trump ceding too much to Putin. Situation mostly a non-factor for markets with crude continuing to hover near early June lows amid lack of progress on ceasefire and possible sanctions relief. Though Trump did reveal he is holding off on hitting China with secondary tariffs for at least for next 2-3 weeks as discussions continue.
