StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.13%, Hang Seng Futures +0.13%, ASX SPI 200 (0.26%), S&P Futures +0.03%

Aug 18 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start Tuesday trade. Futures signaling muted start in Japan and Hong Kong. Australia set for mild early decline. S&P 500 futures flat following quiet Monday session. Australian bonds tracking earlier Treasury weakness. FX markets little changed after dollar strengthened towards one-week high against yen. Crude steady following Monday's 1% gain while gold unchanged. Bitcoin extended pullback towards early August lows.

    • Zelensky and European leaders met Trump at White House on Monday. Talks described as positive with discussions largely on security guarantees and Trump open to some US involvement. Trump later said arrangements underway for meeting between Zelensky and Putin with Trump involved in potential a trilateral summit. While a big press focus, meetings still did not provide much direction for the market given no suggestions about easing of sanctions and Trump seemingly putting additional secondary tariffs on backburner.

    • Markets remain focused on this week's Jackson Hole Symposium and Fed Chair Powell's speech Friday. Consensus seems to revolve around a slightly more dovish tilt from Powell with market currently pricing in a ~85% probability of a September rate cut. Earnings another focus this week with China reporting season to feature results from Xpeng and Xiaomi later Tuesday. Also busy day of Australian earnings. Elsewhere, Japan 20Y bond auction slated for Tuesday afternoon, coming on heels of in-line 30Y sale earlier this month.
