  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling mild opening decline in Japan, and small initial gains in Australia and Hong Kong. S&P 500 futures little changed afterhours. Australian bonds strengthening after Treasuries firmed across the curve. FX markets steady with dollar little changed on major crosses. Crude holding near highs following overnight rebound. Gold flat. Bitcoin fluctuating near early July lows.

    • Big tech pullback continued with coverage revolving around AI bubble and competition concerns. On latter, Nikkei reported China municipalities seeking to achieve at least 70% self-sufficiency in AI chips by 2027 in challenge to ~NVDA~. Stretched valuations in select names and technicals also received mentions. Some thoughts downturn could be short lived given longstanding resilience of buy-the-dip theme while AI secular growth outlook reinforced by recent earnings that helped propel key stocks to record highs.

    • In corporate news, CNBC sources noted Intel (~INTC~) in talks with other big investors about acquiring stake in company. Sony (~6758.JP~) the latest company to hike price for its US PS5 due to tariffs. Nikkei also highlighted how Japan autos passing on tariff costs to American customers. Baidu (~9888.HK~) ADRs dropped 2.6% following in-line Q2 revenue decline, as ad sales weakness offset cloud revenue growth. Another busy day of earnings with Kuaishou (~1024.HK~) reporting. ASX reporting season also in full swing.
