  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed higher. Basic Resources, Autos & Parts and Travel & Leisure the best performers; Insurance, Utilities and Food & Beverage among the notable underperformers. Follows narrowly mixed performance on Thursday but still on track for a positive weekly performance having posted fresh five-month highs and trading close to all-time highs.

    • Fed easing expectations a tailwind for risk sentiment. Fed Chair Powell's widely anticipated Jackson Hole speech leaned more dovish than expected, noting that shifting balance of risks may warrant policy adjustment. Also pointed out downside risks to employment on the rise. Reiterated that tariffs likely to only have a short-lived impact on prices. Not surprisingly, speech did not address political pressures on monetary policy. In Europe, yesterday's PMIs reinforced expectations of unchanged policy for ECB and BoE in September. Today, ECB sources also said after US-EU trade deal, bank can keep rates unchanged in September.

    • Limited macro updates in Europe. German final Q2 GDP came in weaker than preliminary reading with contraction of 0.3% q/q. UK consumer confidence hit best level since December, with biggest driver changing perception on personal finances. French business sentiment steady in August.

    • In earnings news, Ambu (AMBU.B.DC) reported Q3 earnings this morning and raised the lower end of FY organic revenue growth guidance, whilst Bavarian Nordic A/S reported Q2 earnings and narrowed its FY revenue expectations. In Sweden, NIBE Industrier (NIBE.B.SS) issued Q2 earnings numbers. In Austria, UNIQA Insurance Group (UQA.AV) released H1 earnings report and indicated it expects FY EBT of €490-510M.

    • Little of note in M&A; in other news flow, Air Liquide (AI.FP) has signed a binding agreement with Macquarie Asia-Pacific Infrastructure Fund 2, for the acquisition of DIG Airgas for an enterprise value of €2.85B/KRW4.6T. In other corporate news, BAE Systems (BA.LN) is to accelerate chip production for mission-critical defence programs using CHIPS Act funding towards the modernisation of the Microelectronics Centre (MEC) in New Hampshire.

    • Looking ahead to monday's calendar (see - Europe Week Ahead: 25-Aug to 29-Aug attached) Metall Zug (METN.SW), Molecular Partners (MOLN.SW), BE Group (BEGR.SS), Energiekontor (EKT.GR) will be amongst other names to update investors, whilst the macro-calendar releases will include Germany Aug Ifo survey, Spain Jul PPI, Finland Jul PPI.
