Synopsis:
Asian indexes set for positive start to Monday trade as markets process Jackson Hole developments. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures flat after index notched third straight weekly gain. Australian bonds strengthening after Treasury yields fell sharply Friday on dovish comments from Chair Powell. Dollar recovering from Friday sell-off. Crude and gold little changed. Bitcoin pulling back.
Jackson Hole Symposium continued through weekend with BOJ Governor Ueda noting wage hikes likely to keep accelerating due to tightening job market. Remarks follow latest Reuters consensus poll showing larger majority forecasting rate hike in Q4 with October the top choice. Meanwhile Fed rate cut expectations reinforced by dovish-leaning comments by Chair Powell on Friday after he warned risks may warrant adjusting policy amid weakening labor market and that tariff effects on prices will be short-lived.
NVDA earnings out after US market close Wednesday with Street forecasting ~50% top and bottom increase. Anticipation high with Bloomberg citing options data suggesting +/-6% swing post-earnings. Commentary on China operations will be a focus following reports Friday that company told suppliers to halt production related to H20 chips, coming amid China push to encourage adoption of domestic alternatives. CEO Jensen Huang said group seeking White House approval to sell China a more advanced chip.
RBA minutes (Tues) to provide color on board's rate cut deliberations. Japan CPI (Fri) comes after Tokyo core inflation fell to lowest since March. BOK (Thurs) expected to keep rates steady amid elevated household debt. India Q2 GDP (Thurs) forecast to show growth slowdown. Japan and South Korea industrial production (Fr), Japan retail sales and unemployment rate (Fri), and China industrial profits other Asian data points of note. US PCE index (Fri) forecast to show inflation uptick but data de-risked to extent by dovish Powell comments on Friday.
