Synopsis:
Asian markets set for negative start to Monday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Australia, and muted start in Hong Kong. Japan closed for public holiday. S&P 500 futures flat after US indexes notched another positive week. Australian yield curve bear steepening following Treasury weakness on Friday. FX markets steady Crude flat while gold trading just below record high. Bitcoin pulling back from three-week high.
Senior US and Chinese officials met in Madrid on Sunday to discuss economy, trade and TikTok. Talks to continue to Monday with Trump sounding positive and sources noting he is expected to extend TikTok ban or sale deadline. However, FT sources noted persistent divisions on issues such fentanyl with China conditioning further action on relief from 20% tariffs. Meanwhile China launched anti-discrimination probe in US chips, days after US put more Chinese firms on an entity list. Divisions seen reducing likelihood of Trump-Xi summit in Beijing.
China activity data forecast to show economic weakness persisted in August with industrial production, fixed asset investment and retail sales growth little changed from prior month. Housing metrics expected to show property investment declines deepened. August data tracking softer with official manufacturing PMI in contraction, deflation persisting and credit growth slowing further. While soft run of data has kept up calls for additional support, authorities seen resisting looser policy as surging stockmarket adds to caution around easy financial conditions.
