Sep 17 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities poised for a mostly lower open Wednesday. Futures in Japan, Australia and South Korea were softer, while Hong Kong strengthened. Japan ADRs were mixed, while Golden Dragon China index rose sharply. US contracts steady following moderate overnight losses that saw S&P and Nasdaq fading slightly off Monday's record highs; Nasdaq 100 index was down after nine straight days of gains. Mild gain in SOX index offered a positive tech signal, though US Big Tech finished mostly lower with Nvidia (NVDA) among the laggards. US Treasuries were mostly firmer with yields down ~2-3bp at the short end; 20Y auction was well received. Dollar index was down 0.6%, its worst daily performance since 22-Aug. Gold finished up 0.2%. Bitcoin futures were up 1.3%. WTI crude settled up 1.9%.

    • Generally benign session overnight though volumes somewhat higher than the recent average. Focus now squarely on the upcoming FOMC decision. Some thoughts that announcement effects skewed to the downside given a 25bp rate cut is fully priced in. Fed commentary and dot plot stand to affect market expectations for ~150 bp in total easing over the next year. Other events were viewed as secondary -- appeals court blocked Trump from firing Fed Governor Cook as she challenges her dismissal, while Senate confirmed Miran to the board. Better-than-expected data (retail sales, import prices) also had limited impact though upside surprises generally seen as a hinderance to Fed easing.

    • In Asia, BOJ meeting begins tomorrow though a rate hike all but ruled out amid ongoing debate about whether they can move in the opposite direction as the Fed with next meetings to be held so close to each other. BOJ also presages campaigning for the 22-Sep LDP presidential election. October and December viewed as next viable windows of opportunity to hike, albeit each only about a third priced in. Elsewhere, markets continue to monitor thawing US-India trade tensions. Latest Trump rhetoric was positive after the latest call with India PM Modi. Dialogue seemingly still on track after talks resumed this week. Yet, resolution over the Russian oil dispute remain unclear. Macro calendar brings Japan customs trade data; exports seen falling for a fourth straight month in nominal terms, though price factor masking consistent growth in real terms.
