  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets ended the session mostly mixed to lower but off worst levels. France, Italy buck the softer trend. In sectors, banks and healthcare amongst outperformers whilst miners, real estate and retails were the biggest laggards.

    • Focus in Europe on German June industrial output, which missed estimates. Eurozone Aug Sentix Investor Confidence was better than expected, but still in contraction. UK July Halifax house price index also lower than expected. BoE's Pill Q&A session later in the day. On Friday, Pill said tighter monetary policy starting to curb risk of inflation becoming embedded. Over the weekend, data from REC suggested UK hiring fell at fastest pace in over three years, and wages slowed. EU trade chief Dombrovskis said to push China on barriers to exports. TSMC set to approve Dresden chip factory in Germany with €5B investment.

    • On the reporting front, Siemens Energy (ENR.GR) reported lower than expected EPS for Q3 and lowered FY comparable revenue growth guidance; group also said it was reviewing the current strategy and action plan in the wind business, with details of this strategic plan to be presented at the Capital Markets Day in Nov. Futherl in Germany, Scout24 (G24.GR) increased its guidance for EBITDA and revenue growth for FY23 whilst Aurubis (NDA.GR) posted Q3 results and confirmed its FY forecast; Adtran Networks (ADV.GR) and Bertrandt (BDT.GR) also updating investors. Elsewhere, PostNL (PNL.NA) reported Q2 EBIT above consensus and raised its FY normalised EBIT guidance, whilst Clas Ohlson (CLAS.B.SS) published July sales numbers.

    • In M&A news, Campari (CPR.IM) sees an increase in voting rights by Lagfin, its main holder, from 68.6% to 84.0% and announces a new Special Voting Mechanism, whilst KKR controlled - Orchid Lux HoldCo - confirmed it will take OHB (OHB.GR) private at €44.00/sh. Potential buyers are interested in acquiring Haleon's (HLN.LN) Nicotinell and the Struengmann brothers' Athos Service is reportedly close to a deal to acquire Schuelke & Mayr from EQT (EQT.SS). Elsewhere, interested parties entering the next round of bidding for Vinda International Holdings (3331.HK) include Suzano SA and a number of other PE firms, with Bain Capital, CVC Capital Partners and DCP Capital having moved forward in the bidding process for Essity AB's (ESSITY.B.SS) majority stake (52%) in Vinda.

    • Looking ahead to tomorrow's EU econ-calendar, main releases will include, amongst others, Germany Jul final CPI, UK Jul retail sales monitor - BRC and France Jun trade balance.
