StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (0.21%), Hang Seng Futures +2.07%, ASX SPI 200 +0.04%, S&P Futures +0.20%

Jan 23 ,2024

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities poised to open mostly higher Wednesday. Futures in Hong Kong and Australia traded firmer while Japan extended weakness from yesterday's fade. US futures extending gains in S&P 500 and Nasdaq after both indexes closed at new highs. Tech leads positive with Nasdaq outperformance, gains in SOX while Golden Dragon China index rallied in the wake of China market support headlines. Treasuries were mixed with curve steepening. Dollar index was up 0.3% with greenback stronger on the major crosses. Gold finished up 0.2%. Bitcoin futures were down 2.4%, moving back below $40K. WTI crude settled down 0.5%.

    • Main focus on mixed earnings. After-hours highlighted by Netflix (NFLX) beat on subs growth. Markets bracing for upcoming reports from Magnificent Seven names. Aggregate beat rates off to a soft start, broadly in line with subdued expectations. Some talk of limited market upside amid rich valuations and moderating Fed rate cut expectations. Reports widely flagging Q4 GDP and PCE deflator as next checkpoints. Central bank attention turns to ECB meeting, though rates and guidance expected to remain unchanged.

    • Takeaways from China policy support were skeptical despite strength in local markets, particularly in Hong Kong. Reports Beijing considering mainland equity purchases of CNY2T ($278B) to stem market weakness seen only providing a short-term boost in the absence of meaningful reforms. Not much follow-through after the BOJ meeting. USD/JPY more than reversed notable strength during Governor Ueda's press conference. However, Nikkei futures lagged in US hours after yesterday's losses were attributed to positioning as BOJ appears to have moved one step closer to a rate hike with April still the main scenario.

    • Regional macro calendar marks the start of the monthly PMI cycle, starting with Japan. Recall Reuters Tankan showed manufacturing sentiment fell back while services continued to strengthen. Japan customs trade expected to show slower export growth reflecting softening global momentum mixed with pickup in imports. As expected, New Zealand Q4 CPI inflation eased to the weakest pace since mid-2021, though remained well above the RBNZ 1%~3% target range.
