  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed mostly lower with the exception of Germany. Follows broad gains last week, which saw STOXX 600 hit new all-time high. Basic Resources, Utilities and Real Estate the worst performing sectors, while Technology, Financial Services and Industrial Goods&Services outperformed.

    • Quiet macro calendar, leaving attention on speeches from BoE deputy chief Breeden and BoE economist Pill. ECB President Lagarde will also participate in plenary debate on ECB annual report during the European afternoon. Recent central bank speak has seen Fed officials continuing to highlight need for more evidence on inflation, driving another round of hawkish pivot repricing. Markets now pricing in three rate cuts in 2024, in-line with Fed's median outlook from December SEP. Similarly, markets pricing in ECB rate cuts of less than 100 bps 2024 and BoE rate cut expectations have also eased amid ongoing reluctance to signal near-term cut in rates.

    • CBI quarterly data showed pace of contraction in retail sales slowed; BCC survey showed most Britain exporters and manufacturers have felt impact from Red Sea supply chain disruptions; economists warn chancellor Hunt against spending cuts to finance pre-election tax giveaways. In other developments, Ukraine floats possibility of inviting Russia to peace summit while US and UK carry out fresh strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen.

    • Light earnings news flow with PostNL (PNL.NA) shares closed down (4.7%) after FY24 EBIT guidance was much weaker than expected. CIE Automotive (CIE.SM), Bank of Ireland Group (BIRG.ID), Bunzl (BNZL.LN), Retail Estates (RET.BB) and Liechtensteinische Landesbank (LLBN.SW) were among few other names updating investors before the open.
