  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed broadly higher Friday, led by Denmark +2.8%, Belgium +1%, Italy +1.1%, while most other indices in the region saw gains of less than 1%. Recall that European markets rallied in February seeing a fourth consecutive month of gains. The Stoxx Europe 600 closed near its record high on Friday. Sector outperformers today included Real Estate, Energy and Tech, while Insurance was main laggard.

    • Main macro update in Europe today was Eurozone CPI data, which came in above consensus, yet still down on prior month. Eurozone preliminary CPI for February posted lowest headline print since November 2023, at 2.6% y/y vs 2.5% expected and 2.8% prior. Core CPI came in 3.1% vs 2.9% expected which was still the lowest reading since spring 2022. Data supports no change at next week's ECB policy decision and plays into hawks' calls for patience before cutting rates. Looking ahead, analysts expect some volatility due to Easter taking place already at the end of March and not in April like in previous years. Positive Easter effect often most visible in food and items related to tourism but any upside should fade away in April data. In other regional data, final Eurozone and UK manufacturing PMIs revised up from flash. Eurozone unemployment in line with consensus. UK Nationwide house price data came in firmer-than-expected, mirroring other updates pointing to upward momentum in the UK housing market. UK retail traffic weak in February, though exacerbated by one-off factors. Press reported latest update from UK fiscal watchdog has reduced the amount of space for tax cuts ahead of next week's UK budget, which is due to be announced on Wednesday.

    • The week ahead also sees another busy week of earnings/updates with the likes of Ashtead (AHT.LN), Bayer (BAYN.GR), Deutsche Post (DHL.GR), Henkel (HEN.GR), Lindt & Sprungli (LISN.SW), Merck (MRK.GR) and Thales (HO.FP) reporting.

    • In today's session, Daimler Truck (DTG.GR) shares jumped over 17% as its Q4 results and 2024 guidance impressed. Conversely, the likes of Kuehne + Nagel (KNIN.SW), Saint Gobain (SGO.FP), Volkswagen (VOW.GR) and Aegon (AGN.NA) took hits on their respective earnings. In M&A, ITV (ITV.LN) shares rallied over 14% on news it sells its 50% Share of BritBox International to BBC Studios for £255M cash, to be distributed to shareholders through a share buyback.
