StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (1.09%), Hang Seng Futures (1.72%), ASX SPI 200 (0.82%), S&P Futures (0.21%)

Apr 10 ,2024

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for negative start to Thursday trade. Futures pointing to opening declines in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures extending declines afterhours. Bond markets under pressure amid double-digit increase Australian and New Zealand yields. Dollar index rallied to fresh four-month high, with yen falling to 34-year low. Crude rebounded from earlier lows. Gold choppy around CPI data. Bitcoin adding to overnight gains.

    • US CPI reverberating after another hotter-than-expected print appeared to dampen disinflation momentum with core services a big factor behind latest increase. Data prompted another round of hawkish repricing with markets now anticipating one less rate cut than projected by Fed in March. Futures pricing in two cuts in 2024 with the first now not expected until September.

    • Markets on FX intervention watch after yen broke below closely watched 152-per dollar handle in wake of hotter-than-expected US CPI. Yen's drop follows drumbeat of verbal intervention warnings from Japan authorities. Today's yuan fix also likely to attract interest after offshore RMB fell back to one-week low. USDCNY trading near 2% upper limit also spurring speculation of more forceful action by China authorities.

    • China inflation data forecast to show pullback in CPI inflation and pickup in PPI deflation. Credit data also on tap this week, forecast to show rebound in new loan growth. Comes after recent run of better-than-expected data that has prompted talk of nascent economic stabilization. Goldman Sachs upgraded its China 2024 GDP growth forecast, citing recent manufacturing strength and inventory rebuild.
