  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed mixed today. Norway +1.9% and the UK +0.9% lead outperformers, whilst Greece (1.1%) and Switzerland (0.8%) lead underperformers.

    • Risk off seen in US markets with some focus on latest ramp in geopolitical tensions, along with lack of NII guidance raises from US banks. Main focus this week has been further hawkish repricing of Fed pivot expectations following a third straight hotter core CPI print. On the contrary, ECB-speak after yesterday's policy decision supporting June cut and diverging from Fed policy. Markets pricing in less than two Fed rate cuts in 2024 while ECB seen cutting three times, though hawkish Fed policy might influence rate path. Notable repricing also in BoE outlook with outsized reaction to comments from MPC member Greene, though has sounded more hawkish before.

    • Macro data in Europe includes UK GDP data, which saw better three-month outturn and modest growth in monthly reading. Final CPI updates from Germany, France and Spain in line with flash. Swedish inflation supports May rate cut. ECB publish survey of professional forecasters unchanged from prior update. BoE published recommendations on policy from former Fed Chair Bernanke. Der Spiegel reports Germany's Lindner planning €20B tax relief to support economy.

    • On the reporting front, VARTA (VAR1.GR) share are sliding ~(29%) after updating on its restructuring plans, with Vår Energi (VAR.NO) and Petrofac (PFC.LN) also publishing updates; of note, ThyssenKrupp (TKA.GR) presented the initial conceptual outlines of a planned realignment of steel operations.

    • In M&A news, Societe Generale (GLE.FP) sold Société Générale Marocaine de Banques and La Marocaine Vie for €745M, whilst the CMA is considering whether PGS (PGS.NO) and TGS' (TGS.NO) planned combination creates relevant merger situation; also in the UK, ADNOC reported to have previously examined possible acquisition of BP (BP.LN).

    • Looking ahead to next week's calendar on Monday (see - Europe Week Ahead: 15-Apr to 19-Apr attached) Sulzer (SUN.SW), Broadpeak (ALBPK.FP), Mobico Group (MCG.LN), Ceres Power (CWR.LN), Equals Group (EQLS.LN), Sika (SIKA.SW), Bystronic (BYS.SW), Galp Energia (GALP.PL), PageGroup (PAGE.LN), Alphawave IP Group (AWE.LN), Audioboom (BOOM.LN) and Ekinops (EKI.FP) will be among other names to update investors, whilst the macro-calendar releases will include Switzerland Mar PPI, Norway Mar trade balance, Finland Mar CPI, Eurozone Feb industrial production.
