Synopsis
European equity markets set to open lower amidst Asian equities sharply lower Tuesday. Risk aversion attributed to latest ramp in Middle East tensions while disappointing China data adding to bearish sentiment. Losses intensifying in China, Japan, Korea, Australia and Taiwan. S&P 500 futures extending declines afterhours.
Middle East tensions continue to weigh on risk sentiment as initial optimism for a de-escalation gives way to fears over full-blown conflict after Israel vowed to respond forcefully. US and allies working to prevent escalation and expressed opposition to retaliatory strike, though question now more a matter of when than if Israel will retaliate. Iran also threatened to respond "within seconds" to any strike. However, headlines remain fluid with Israel also saying it is not looking to spark all-out war.
