Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Nikkei and ASX futures pointing to gains on the open while Hang Seng futures flat. Australian and New Zealand bonds rallying after Treasury yields fell sharply following softer US CPI data. Yen extending rally, highest against dollar in over a week. Crude, base and precious metals lifted from earlier lows. Bitcoin surged 8%.
Cooler-than-expected US CPI put renewed impetus behind disinflation narrative following recent run of hot prints. Fed officials cautioned more data needed to properly gauge disinflation trajectory. Following data, markets adjusted up probability of a June rate cut to 34% from 27% and are fully pricing in a cut by September; Soft US retail sales and manufacturing data added to Fed easing bets.
Japan preliminary GDP forecast to show economy shrunk in Q1, weighed down by falls in private consumption, capex and external demand. Previews also noted effect of earthquake in impacting activity along with temporary auto suspensions related to certification scandals. However, JCER survey showed expectations for a growth rebound in Q2. Economists continue to expect BOJ to hike again, with October seen as most likely month for an increase. \
Australian employment data forecast to show rebound in headline jobs and uptick in unemployment rate last month. Comes after RBA left cash rate on hold last week while opting against adopting more hawkish policy bias in light of hot Q1 CPI. Hawkish inflation forecasts pointed to low probability of a rate cut this year though markets also reduced odds of rate hike as data showed wage inflation unexpectedly slowed in Q1.
