Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Nikkei futures little changed while ASX and Hang Seng futures signaling positive start. S&P 500 futures up slightly after US markets logged fresh record highs last week. Australian and New Zealand bonds tracking Treasury curve bear steepening on Friday. AUD inching higher, dollar steady elsewhere. Gold nearing record high. Crude little changed early. Bitcoin flat after pulling back from Friday's highs.
China expected to leave 1Y and 5Y LPRs unchanged today after PBOC kept MLF rate steady last week. However, rate cut expectations remain after authorities stepped up property market rescue efforts Friday, including allowing local governments to acquire some homes, removing mortgage floor rate and lowering minimum downpayment ratio. At the same time, initial takeaways recalled past failures of property rescue measures with analysts arguing more needed to meaningfully revive housing demand.
China announced anti-dumping probe into thermoplastics imports in likely retaliation against Biden administration's tariff hike last week. Limited scope of China's probe fits with thoughts authorities seeking to avoid a more damaging tariff war. In other geopolitical developments, Iran President Raisi's helicopter crashed in Iran with his fate uncertain. Some attention to Israeli political uncertainty after Benny Gantz threatened to quit War Cabinet if PM Netanyahu does not commit to postwar plans.
