Synopsis
European equity markets are set to open higher amidst Asian equities mostly higher Thursday. Nikkei rebounding amid strong gains in semis. Chip stocks also driving Taiwan's index higher with TSMC launching buyback. Hang Seng leading China market gains though property stocks back under pressure. S&P 500 futures steady afterhours. Sweden closed for National Day.
On today's agenda, Netherland is the first country to vote in European parliamentary elections (bulk of the countries vote on Sun (9th)). BDEW Congress takes place with speakers including minister of economics Habeck at 13:25CET. Entrepreneurs' Day NRW; Guest speaker is minister of finance Lindner. Norway's PM Støre and defense minister Gram in Normandy, France, and are among the participants in a commemoration of 80 years since D-Day. Russia May new car registrations.
In central banks, focus on ECB interest rate decision at 14:15CET, press conf. 14:45. Expectations are for a 25bps cut in the benchmark interest rate. Release will be accompanied by the latest staff economic projections. Other central bank events include Bank of Finland's Deputy Governor Nykänen speech at 8:00CET at RiskLab/BoF/ESRB Conf on AI and Systemic Risk Analytics and Czech Central Bank meeting on Financial Stability.
Macro releases due today include: Germany Apr factory orders and May construction PMI, Switzerland May unemployment rate, Spain Apr industrial production, Italy Apr retail sales, UK May construction PMI, Greece Q1 unemployment rate, Eurozone Apr retail sales, Ireland May unemployment rate.
In Corporate news, Norcod (NCOD.NO) and (Addex Therapeutics (ADXN.SW) reported Q1 earnings this morning. In Greece, Piraeus Financial (TPEIR.GA) provided its updated 2024 guidance. In France, Remy Cointreau (RCO.FP) issued its FY earnings and reiterated both its financial and extra-financial targets for 2029-2030. In M&A, Atos (ATO.FP) extended the deadline for selection of preferred financial restructuring proposal to the beginning of the week of 10-Jun-24.
