Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Nikkei futures pointing to mild opening gains while Hang Seng and ASX futures signaling small declines. US contracts a touch lower. Australian and New Zealand yield curves bull flattening, tracking Friday's Treasury rally that followed soft US payrolls data. Euro gapped lower following French election, dollar steady elsewhere. Gold steady after touching late May highs. Crude flat. Bitcoin pulling back from weekend highs.
Early morning movement in FX with euro reacting to France second round election. Markets reacting to left wing alliance's surprise victory after polls had Le Pen's RN winning largest number of seats. No party managed to secure absolute majority, raising likelihood of legislative gridlock. However, outcome has also some market concern about either extreme enacting radical spending agendas.
Macro takes center stage after politics dominated newsflow last week. Markets eyeing potential catalysts from US inflation data, Fed Chair Powell's Congressional testimony, and central bank decisions. Weaker-than-expected US payrolls put more traction behind disinflation narrative, leading markets to fully price in two Fed rate cuts this year. Around Asia, attention will be on whether RBNZ and BOK signal more dovish bias at their respective meetings.
