Synopsis:
Asian markets set for negative start to Friday trade. Nikkei futures lower while Hang Seng and ASX tracking larger opening declines. S&P 500 futures edging higher afterhours. Bonds mixed with Australian yield curve bear steepening while New Zealand yields lower. Dollar steady after rebounding against majors, yen off lows following Japan CPI. Crude and gold erased earlier gains. Bitcoin little changed after pulling back from one-month high.
Rotation trade reversal the main market development overnight with value/small caps pulling back following breakneck rally over recent days that prompted concerns about sustainability amid stretched positioning/valuations/sentiment. At the same time, TSMC's better-than-expected results generated only muted gains in its US ADRs and US tech stocks extended recent declines.
Japan core inflation rose a bit less than expected while ex-food and energy measure in-line. Data comes as speculation continues whether BOJ will accompany JGB taper details with a rate cut this month. Markets pricing in ~50% chance of a July rate hike though yen's recent rebound seen lessening pressure on central bank to act. At the same time, policymakers mindful of avoiding impression policy decision influenced by currency volatility.
Political press dominated by speculation about Biden and whether he will exit race. Reports noting top level Democrats like Pelosi and Obama expressing doubts about his viability and Biden apparently more open to idea of exiting (reports suggesting weekend exit). However, Democratic machinations not expected to immediately shake up trajectory of race with Trump favored to win above contenders.
