Synopsis:
European equity markets closed broadly lower Wednesday, with particular weakness in the Tech and Luxury sectors on the back of earnings newsflow. Those same dynamics caused the Netherlands AEX (1.3%) and French CAC 40 (1.1%) to be the worst regional performers. Meanwhile, Portugal PSI 20 +0.7% and Belgium BEL 20 +0.7% bucked the negative trend. Gold, Oil higher.
On the European macro front, German GfK consumer confidence beat expectations with income expectations at best level since October 2021. The Eurozone flash PMI showed the recovery is losing momentum. The composite PMI hit a five-month low at 50.1 versus prior 50.9 with the economy effectively stalling amid ongoing weakness in manufacturing and a weakening services sector expansion. UK PMI at two-month high amid new business growth at highest level in 15 months. Recall that momentum was dampened somewhat in prior month due to election. Upturn in activity saw firms increase staffing numbers at quickest pace in 13 months. One encouraging development for BoE policy outlook was average prices charged rising at slowest pace in almost three-and-a-half years. Input cost inflation also eased for services sector firms amid softening wages, though increase in hiring could see renewed upward pressure. However, manufacturers faced fastest rise in costs in one-and-a-half years due to higher freight costs amid Middle East tensions
Focus on earnings newsflow; luxury bellwether LVMH (MC.FP) saw a small miss on both top-line and earnings amid macroeconomic pressures, geographic distribution, and foreign exchange challenges. Q2 sales fell short in all divisions. In Tech, there was some focus on US tech earnings with TSLA under pressure following bottom line miss. GOOGL was down after Q2 revenue topped forecasts. AI-related demand underpinned Cloud revenue though capex came in a bit higher than expected. In Europe, ASM International (ASM.NA), Temenos (TEMN.SW) fell on back of earnings. BE Semiconductor (BESI.NA) led EU semi names down ahead of its earnings report tomorrow; some concerns Street is too optimistic after peer ASMPT (522.HK) shares fell over (23%) after its Q3 guidance missed expectations. In bank earnings, Deutsche Bank (DBK.GR) missed, while Santander (SAN.SM), BNP Paribas (BNP.FP) and UniCredit (UCG.IM) all beat.
In M&A news, Ascential (ASCL.LN) confirmed that it has received a conditional proposal from Informa (INF.LN) regarding a possible 568p/share cash offer; UniCredit (UCG.IM) is set to acquire Vodeno Sp. and Aion Bank SA/NV for ~€370M while Exclusive Networks (EXN.FP) received a €24.25/share binding offer from Clayton Dubilier & Rice, in consortium with Exclusive Networks' majority holder Permira.
Another busy session tomorrow for earnings, with AstraZeneca (AZN.LN), Unilever (ULVR.LN), TotalEnergies (TTE.FP), Sanofi (SAN.FP) among the bigger names on the agenda.
