  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Hong Kong and Australia while pointing to initial gains in Japan. S&P 500 contracts marginally lower (US markets closed Monday for Labor Day). Australian and New Zealand bonds under pressure after Treasuries weakened across the curve on Friday. Yen extending losses, down to one-week low against dollar. Crude lower amid reports OPEC+ weighing proceeding with planned output hike in October. Gold flat. Bitcoin down to lowest since mid-August.

    • China manufacturing PMI fell by more than expected to six month low in August as new orders shrunk at a faster pace amid soft domestic demand. However, nonmanufacturing PMI unexpectedly firmed amid summer-driven pickup in services activity. Property market remains under pressure after private survey from China Index Academy showed new home price growth slowed in August.

    • Earlier, South Korean export growth fell from six month high as semiconductor shipments expanded at slowest pace in five months and auto exports contracted again. Economic calendar gets busier today with China Caixin manufacturing PMI forecast to show recovery in factory activity. Japan capex growth forecast to have accelerated while final manufacturing PMI expected to confirm contraction. Australian job ads, building approvals and business inventories also due out.
