StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.19%, Hang Seng Futures +0.12%, ASX SPI 200 +0.05%, S&P Futures (0.12%)

Sep 02 ,2024

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling small initial gains in Japan and Hong Kong and flat start in Australia. S&P 500 futures touch lower after European equities ended mixed-to-flat in quiet Monday trade (US was closed for Labor Day). Australian and New Zealand yields up 1-2 bp. FX markets steady after yen fell towards two-week low against dollar. Crude off earlier lows following Libya force majeure news. Gold also off Monday lows. Bitcoin little changed after recouping earlier losses.

    • On macro front, South Korean inflation fell by more than expected to lowest since Mar-2021, widening scope for rate cut in coming months. Comes after data on Monday showed sharp fall in Seoul apartment sales in August, seen allaying BOK concerns about financial stability risks from elevated household debt. Final set of Australian GDP partials also due out today, including current account and government spending figures.

    • Markets remain in waiting mode for US nonfarm payrolls on Friday. Current forecast is for a pickup in headline employment and downtick in jobless rate. Data crucial in shaping 25 vs 50 bp September Fed rate cut debate with markets currently pricing in ~25% chance of 50 bp move this month. Fed still seen implementing ~100 bp of easing in final three meetings of the year (implying 50 bp cut in one meeting).

    • Negative seasonality cited as risk factor for equities with September typically one of the worst months of the year for equities. Strategists caution expected Fed rate cut in September no panacea for equities and may be catalyst for down leg. JP Morgan pointed to unattractive sentiment and positioning indicators, along with elevated political and geopolitical uncertainty.
