Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Tuesday trade. Futures signalling opening gains in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. US contracts extending their advance afterhours. Australian and New Zealand bonds rebounding following minor Treasury curve flattening overnight. FX markets steady after yen pulled back from Dec-2023 high against dollar. Gold and copper swung up from Monday's lows. Crude range bound. Bitcoin back to its highest since Thursday.
China August trade data forecast to show export growth slowed to 6.5% y/y from 7.0% in July. Exports have been a main driver of China economic growth over recent months and recent manufacturing PMIs have shown some easing in pace of export order contraction. However, import growth forecast to have slowed to 2.0% from 7.2%, underlining weak domestic demand after Asian manufacturing PMIs broadly showed China-driven hit to export orders.
Takeaways from Monday's soft China inflation data highlighted persistence of deflation pressures amid falling input costs and weak demand. Data recalled remarks by former PBOC Governor Yi Gang last week in which he made rare public mention of need for policymakers to focus on fighting deflation. While CPI data reinforced calls for additional policy support, authorities have signaled little appetite for direct stimulus to boost consumer demand.
