Sep 22 ,2024
Synopsis:
Asian markets set for negative start to Monday trade. Futures signalling opening losses in Hong Kong and Australia. Japan closed for Autumnal Equinox Day. S&P 500 futures flat. Bonds weakening with Australian and New Zealand yield curves steepening. FX markets little changed following yen weakness Friday. Gold steady after posting fresh record high. Crude flat. Bitcoin hovering near one-month high.
Markets begin new trading week following bullish stretch in wake of Fed's 50 bp cut. Fed outcome tied into growing traction behind soft landing narrative, which has also found support from recent macro data. Still, there were select hawkish takeaways from Chair Powell's press conference after he noted market should not assume 50 bp new pace of easing. Markets have since wound back to pricing in ~58 bp of total cuts in final two meetings of 2024 (vs ~70 bp day before).
BOJ Governor Ueda's press conference on Friday corresponded with yen weakening to lowest against dollar since early September. Ueda set for follow-up speech Tuesday after noting Friday that upside inflation risks appear to be easing. Takeaways noted his comments suggest higher hurdle for next rate hike with futures paring odds of December rate hike to just 30%.
