Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Nikkei futures pointing to rebound while Hang Seng and ASX futures flat. Mainland China markets remain closed for Golden Week holiday. S&P 500 futures up slightly afterhours. Australian and New Zealand bonds back under pressure, tracking earlier Treasury curve steepening. Yen weakness the big story in FX markets. Crude steady after pulling back from Wednesday highs. Gold fluctuating after shedding 1% in cash session. Bitcoin down towards two-week low.
Yen under pressure Wednesday, experiencing its largest single decline against dollar since mid-2022. Weakness followed meeting between new Japan PM Ishiba and BOJ Governor Ueda, in which Ishiba said he didn't believe current environment warranted rate hike, marking change in tack since indicating tolerance for normalization ahead of LDP leadership vote. Ueda's remarks also signaled caution about near-term rate hike.
Middle East situation remains fluid as markets await Israeli response to Iran's missile barrage on Tuesday. Israeli officials reiterated their response will be significant with talk about potentially targeting oil facilities and other infrastructure. While key concern remains tit-for-tat escalation, Israel also reportedly says it is not looking to spark regional war. Crude remains below late September highs amid thoughts markets do not envisage major hit to supplies.
China stockmarket momentum continues after Nasdaq Golden Dragon index rallied another 5% overnight. Comes after Hong Kong-listed China shares notched 13th straight gain on Tuesday, taking HSCE index to highest since Feb-2022 (up 30% in past two weeks). Stimulus announcements continue to drive turnaround in sentiment, though speculative buying (retail and hedge fund participation) suspected of magnifying upside.
