  • Synopsis:

    • European ended lower. Follows positive close on Monday. Basic Resources and Banks relative best performers; Travel/Leisure, Autos, and Energy the biggest decliners.

    • On the macro front, German GfK consumer confidence hit highest level since April 2022 with GfK index rising more than expected to (18.3) from (21.0) while Germany's DIHK cut its growth forecast. In UK, BoE mortgage approval data came in ahead of estimate 65.65K vs consensus 64.9K and prior revised 64.96K from 64.86K, which suggests upside momentum for housing market. Also, Sep M4 Money Supply grows faster than expected +0.6% m/m vs consensus +0.1% and prior (0.1%). Elsewhere, update from BRC show UK shop prices at lowest level in three years. Might indicate that UK headline inflation will remain below BoE's 2% target. Reuters poll showed majority of economists expect a BoE cut in Nov, but unchanged policy in Dec.

    • Focus on EU decision to adopt extra tariffs of up to 35.3% on China EVs. However, measure may not be definitive. Europe and China continue negotiations, reportedly exploring possible minimum price commitments from Chinese producers or investments in Europe.

    • Another busy day for earnings updates; out of DACHs, Novartis (NOVN.SW) Q3 numbers beat and group also raised FY guidance. Covestro (1COV.GR) posted Q3 EBITDA and revenue miss and narrowed FY guidance. Deutsche Lufthansa (LHA.GR) Q3 net income beat; revenue, FCF missed; confirmed FY adj EBIT guidance. Adidas (ADS.GR), Drägerwerk (DRW3.GR), HelloFresh Group (HFG.GR) reported Q3 earnings in line with preliminary releases. In the UK, HSBC Holdings (HSBA.LN) posted Q3 revenue and pretax income beat, while NII missed; group reiterated FY guidance and announced $3B share buyback. BP (BP.LN) reported Q3 underlying RC net profit and PBT ahead of consensus; intends to execute a $1.75B share buyback. Hargreaves Lansdown (HL.LN) issued Q1 trading statement with revenue at £196.5M, +7% vs year-ago £183.8M and AUA at quarter end at £157.3B. Pearson (PSON.LN) saw Q3 underlying group sales growth up +5% and confirmed FY guidance. In Spain, Banco Santander (SAN.SM) reported better-than-expected Q3 underlying net income and underlying PBT. Acerinox (ACX.SM) also reported Q3 and added it expected weakness of the demand for stainless steel to continue for Q4. In Nordics, Loomis (LOOMIS.SS), Orkla (ORK.NO), UPM-Kymmene (UPM.FH), Fortum (FORTUM.FH) were among some of the notable companies to update investors with their latest numbers.

    • In M&A headlines, media report Nexans (NEX.FP) rejected takeover bid from American investment fund CD&R. Further in the press, CNMC may need to launch extended review of BBVA's (BBVA.SM) bid for Sabadell (SAB.SM). Vertu Motors (VTU.LN) acquires Burrows Motor Company Limited for £12.5M. Everfuel (EFUEL.NO) announced results of recommended voluntary cash offer of NOK 13/sh by Faro BidCo ApS with 90.5% acceptance received.
