Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Hang Seng futures signaling small opening decline while ASX opens slightly higher. Japan closed for Culture Day holiday. S&P 500 futures flat after recording second straight weekly decline. Australian bonds firming with curve bull steepening. FX markets steady after dollar clawed back early morning weakness. Bitcoin flat after falling back towards late October lows over weekend.
US election this week's big focus after slew of weekend polls showed Trump and Harris evenly matched nationally, and in swing states. Recent bond yield back partly attributed to growing expectations of a Trump win, driving talk about deficit-widening impact of tax cuts, and inflationary impulse from tariffs. That narrative has also underpinned dollar strength. Still, odds have swung towards Harris in the final stretch, leaving markets primed for volatility over coming days.
China NPC Standing Committee meeting underway today with fiscal stimulus estimates ranging from CNY2-10T. Aside from headline figure, composition of package will also matter for markets, particularly extent of support aimed at boosting consumption and domestic demand. Still, there have been few indications of big bang stimulus with recent source reports noting funding will be allocated to local government debt restructuring and acquisition of idle land and unsold homes
