Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures pointing to initial gains in Japan as ASX opens flat. Hang Seng futures weaker following Wednesday sell-off in wake of Trump's win. S&P 500 futures flat after index logged best session in over two years. Australian bonds steady following Wednesday's big backup in global yields. Gold and crude little changed. Muted moves in FX markets after dollar had best session since Sep-2022. Bitcoin peeling lower after surging to record high.
Trump's election and likelihood of GOP sweep triggered risk-on move in equity markets, reflecting removal of election overhang as well as broader animal spirits dynamic. Meanwhile, big sell-off in bond markets and rally in US dollar heightened attention on likely impact of his proposed tax and trade policies on deficits and inflation, prompting markets to further wind Fed back easing expectations in 2025.
Trump's tariff brings into sharp focus economic consequences for Asia from this threat to impose tariffs of at least 60%. Economists estimate hit to China GDP growth but Trump's win also encouraging expectations of larger stimulus at this week's NPC Standing Committee meeting. Also some discussion about potential for dollar strength and EM currency depreciation pressure to limit room for developing Asian economies to cut rates.
Central banks in focus tonight with Fed expected to cut rates by 25 bp. Few changes expected to policy statement with Chair Powell reiterating recent messaging on data dependency. Market still pricing in December rate cut though odds of a hold decision rose following Trump's win. Moreover, market pricing in just two rate cuts in 2025 (vs four in October). Separately, BOE also expected to cut rate by 25 bp.
