  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets ended mostly higher with pan-European indices just off best levels. Austria +2.2%, Netherlands +2.0% and Norway +1.8% led the outperformers whilst Denmark and Greece both down (0.1%) bucked the firmer trend.

    • Market participants still track familiar themes. European markets lag US peers as concerns over Trump trade policies weigh on sentiment. Promises over tax cuts has increased spotlight on deficit levels and likelihood of higher borrowing. German election campaign also looks likely to see wider debate on changing debt rule to accommodate higher borrowing. While concerns over a growth slowdown in Europe has elevated ECB rate cut expectations, more government spending could have implications for medium-term inflation expectations. Yet, ECB insiders suggest back-to-back 25bps cuts appropriate into 2025.

    • Macro data in Europe includes more upbeat UK house price data from RICS. Eurozone employment, GDP and industrial production due. October ECB minutes noted little risk seen in cutting rates with policy still restrictive. Inflation outlook affected by softer indicators of economic activity, but too early to declare victory. In the US, October core PPI in line, though final demand services accelerated slightly. Initial jobless claims came in below consensus. Continuing claims in line and down slightly w/w, though still holding near cycle high. Fed Governor Kugler highlighted disinflation trends, rebalanced labor market, but said pause appropriate if progress stalls or inflation reaccelerates.

    • On a busy earnings front, in the DACH region, Deutsche Telekom (DTE.GR) reported Q3 numbers and raised FY Adjusted EBITDA AL guidance. Siemens AG (SIE.GR) reported strong Q4 ahead of consensus and provided FY25 outlook. E.ON SE (EOAN.GR) posted in-line 9M adjusted net income and EBITDA and confirmed FY guidance. Merck KGaA (MRK.GR) posted better -than-expected Q3 EPS & EBIT pre one-time items, while net sales were a miss; confirmed and specified FY24 guidance.

    • In the UK, Aviva (AV.LN) shares traded higher post Q3 trading update with company reporting gross premiums written of £9.12B, +13% y/y and adding it was confident in achieving its FY group targets. B&M European Value Retail (BME.LN) was also higher post H1 numbers. Burberry Group (BRBY.LN) shares soared following H1 numbers and strategic update.

    • In France, SCOR SE (SCR.FP) reported Q3 adj net income €150M vs consensus €116M. Alstom (ALO.FP) posted H1 earnings mostly in line with expectations, FCF, order and adjusted EBIT ahead of expectationt. Casino Guichard-Perrachon (CO.FP) presented strategic plan "Renouveau 2028". Elsewhere, ASML (ASML.NA) confirmed potential 2030 scenarios for annual revenue between ~€44B and €60B with gross margin of between ~56% and 60% as part of CMD today. Telecom Italia (TIT.IM) reported Q3 numbers after the close yesterday.

    • On M&A front, Volvo Cars (VOLCAR.B.SS) sold 30% stake in Lynk & Co to Zeekr for RMB 5.4B (~SEK 8B). Embracer Group (EMBRAC.B.SS) to divest Easybrain to Miniclip for consideration of $1.2B (SEK12.9B) on cash and debt free basis. Shell (SHEl.LN) is reportedly looking to sell part of portfolio of nature-based carbon projects. Kuehne & Nagel (KNIN.SW) to acquire 51% stake in IMC Logistics.
