Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Wednesday trade. Hang Seng futures flat while Nikkei futures pointing to mild opening declines. ASX higher in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat after US indexes ended higher Tuesday. Australia bond yields extending move lower while New Zealand bonds flat ahead of RBNZ meeting. FX markets flat after Trump tariff threat drove heavy losses in peso and Loonie while yen near two-week high. Crude and gold nudging higher. Bitcoin steadying following second straight sell-off.
Trump's tariff announcement remains a key talking point though market fallout was contained to FX with Canadian and Mexican currencies the big decliners. While Trump's announcement reignited trade tensions following recent positive sentiment surrounding his economic policies, it was seen as more of a negotiation tactic to encourage cooperation on drugs and immigration rather than a response to unfair trade practices.
RBNZ expected to cut OCR by 50 bp to 4.25%, representing second straight 50 bp reduction with previews noting central bank's shift in emphasis from fighting inflation to supporting economy. Updated OCR track will generate interest amid thoughts RBNZ will bring forward projected trough, consistent with the more front-loaded easing cycle and expectations pace of rate cuts to slow in 2025.
