Synopsis:
Asian markets set for cautious start to Friday trade. Futures signaling flat open in Japan and Hong Kong. Australian stocks lower in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat following quiet Thursday session ahead of nonfarm payrolls. Australian and New Zealand bonds weakening after Treasuries bear flattened overnight. Crude steady after latest OPEC+ production increase delay was flagged in press. Bitcoin unable to sustain move above $100K.
November US nonfarm payrolls forecast to show headline employment rebounded from hurricane and strike-affected October print. Jobless rate expected to be unchanged. Economist previews noted even a strong November report unlikely to push Fed away from 25 bp rate cut this month though also view that a weaker print could drive reassessment toward a steeper rate cut path.
Limited market fallout from short-lived South Korea martial law declaration. Korean won, credit default swaps and stocks steadied Thursday following initial volatility spike. Stabilization attributed to regulatory backstop efforts including pledges to boost short-term liquidity. However, political situation remains uncertain with South Korean opposition conceding difficulty in forcing President Yoon's ouster.
RBI expected to leave rates on hold though expectations of a more dovish stance have grown following sharper-than-forecast growth slowdown in Q3. Central bank dialed back hawkish stance in October by removing 'withdrawal of accommodation' line from policy statement. Some thought RBI may reduce cash reserve ratio in bid to boost liquidity while another focus will be on number of MPC members voting for cut.
