StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.26%, Hang Seng Futures +3.42%, ASX SPI 200 (0.25%), S&P Futures (0.08%)

Dec 09 ,2024

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening rally in Hong Kong and mild opening gains in Japan. Australia weaker in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat following negative offshore session. Australian and New Zealand bonds weakening, following earlier Treasury curve bear steepening. Yen steady after retreating to one-week low. Crude fading a touch following overnight strength. Gold flat. Bitcoin steadying after falling back below $100K.

    • Markets remain attuned to China stimulus headlines after stocks rallied late Monday following Politburo meeting. Dovish takeaways highlighted looser monetary policy stance next year along with emphasis on domestic demand. Comes as China Economic Work Conference is slated to run this week, where leaders will discuss economic and policy priorities for 2025 amid calls for meaningful step-up in fiscal support to revive domestic demand.

    • China trade data forecast to show exports grew 8.5% y/y in November according to Reuters consensus, slower than October's 12.7% pace. China export growth has helped buttress economy, though trade sector faces headwinds from Trump tariffs (2024 export growth partly attributable to suggestions firms front-loading shipments ahead of tariffs). Imports forecast to have risen 0.3% following October's decline, emblematic of soft demand.

    • RBA expected to leave cash rate at 4.35%. Economist previews not anticipating major changes to policy statement with board not ruling anything or out with respect to rates. Some thought RBA might make dovish tweaks to policy statement to account for weak consumption, though also expected to reemphasize concerns over elevated core inflation and dismiss prospects of rate cut in near-term.
