Dec 10 ,2024
Synopsis:
Asian markets set for cautious start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling mild opening decline in Japan and while Hang Seng futures flat. ASX slightly lower in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat higher after US markets ended lower Tuesday. Australian bonds tracking earlier Treasury curve bear steepening. Yen hit fresh MTD low against dollar. Gold flat after nearing one-month high. Crude steady. Bitcoin fluctuating below $100K.
China Economic Work Conference slated to get underway with leaders to discuss economic and policy priorities in 2025. Follows recent Politburo meeting where authorities signaled looser monetary policy stance and emphasis on domestic demand. While takeaways leaned dovish, muted reaction on global markets also fit with thoughts policymakers need to do more to support growth against looming trade headwinds.
US CPI forecast to show annualized core unchanged near highest since May. CPI the last key datapoint before December FOMC meeting, though economists said print unlikely to move Fed away from 25 bp cut given cautious takeaways from November payrolls. Still, slowing disinflation trends has contributed to a shallower rate cut path in 2025 with market pricing just two cuts next year.
In other developments, Bloomberg sources noted President Biden set to block Nippon Steel's takeover of US Steel following CFIUS review. Reuters Tankan showed Japan manufacturer sentiment turned negative. South Korean politics another focus with opposition eyeing another impeachment vote against President Yoon. China credit data on tap this week with Reuters consensus looking for doubling in November loans and unchanged M2 growth.
