Synopsis:
Asian markets set for muted start to Thursday trade. Not much in way of leads with US and Europe closed for Christmas Day. Australia and Hong Kong remain closed for Boxing Day holiday. Nikkei futures flat. Treasuries were little changed on Tuesday. Dollar firming against kiwi and Canadian dollars, steady on major crosses. Crude continuing to hover around $70. Gold in a tight range. Bitcoin back to $99K.
Nothing new from BOJ Governor Ueda's speech Wednesday, in which he flagged further tightening if economy and prices continue to improve. However, timing uncertain with central bank focused on upcoming wage talks and US policy developments. Yen hovering near five-month low following sell-off in wake of Ueda's post-meeting press conference last week. Markets continue to price in ~50/50 probability of a January rate hike.
PBOC left MLF rate unchanged as expected Wednesday while mopping up net CNY1.15T in liquidity, fifth straight withdrawal and largest since 2014. PBOC cited ample liquidity and has resorted to other tools recently to manage funding as MLF's importance wanes. With authorities pivoting to 'moderately loose' monetary policy stance in 2025, expectations remain for further rate cuts with some economists eying near-term RRR reduction.
Markets processing another batch of China policy headlines. Press sources noted China planning record CNY3T in special treasury bond issuance next year, aimed at boosting consumption via trade-in subsidy programs and equipment upgrades, developing advanced manufacturing and recapitalizing large banks. Meanwhile, local governments to be given more flexibility on how to deploy proceeds from their special bond issuance.
