StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (1.08%), Hang Seng Futures (0.21%), ASX SPI 200 (0.49%), S&P Futures (0.10%)

Dec 30 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities poised to open lower Tuesday. Futures in Hong Kong and Australia extended declines. Japan and South Korea markets closed for New Year holidays. Golden Dragon China index fell 1.80%. US futures lower after another soft main session. Tech leads remained negative with SOX down 1.85% and Big Tech names mostly lower outside of a bounce in Nvidia (NVDA). Treasuries firmer with some curve steepening. Dollar index was up 0.1%. Gold finished down 0.5%. Bitcoin futures were down 0.2%. WTI crude settled up 0.6%.

    • Still no specific catalysts behind latest weakness, though generally attributed to some profit-taking and rebalancing amid light volumes ahead of year-end. Crowded tech trades this year discouraging new long positions. Despite notably negative breadth, narrative remains sanguine with press reports reflecting back on 2024 developments. S&P 500 and Nasdaq still on course to log gains of more than 20% for the year. Yet, soft finish to the year plays into 2025 uncertainties mainly stemming from Trump tariff policies.

    • Regional sentiment leaning cautious. In China, Shanghai Composite on track to log first gain in three years owing to a Q4 recovery. Volumes have been elevated over the past two months on a record annual pace. Activity notably driven by domestics, particularly retail, while many foreign investors remain sidelined. Stimulus optimism continues, though main question of the scale of fiscal expansion remains unanswered. Japan narrative similarly lacking euphoria after a record year-end close in the Nikkei 225. Markets continue to look ahead to 2025 wage hikes, a key variable for BOJ rate hikes, though path clouded by yen volatility and political instability under the minority government.

    • Main Asia macro event set to be China PMIs though consensus looks for the official manufacturing index to remain steady in marginal expansion territory. Broad stimulus effects cited as the main support factor. But market sensitivity looks skewed to the downside given prior disappointment over the lack of forceful measures to address property/consumption weakness and mixed nature of recent data releases. Key focus remains on legislative sessions in March. Elsewhere, South Korea headline CPI inflation was marginally firmer than expected though core inflation edged lower.
