Synopsis:
Asia equities poised to open mostly higher Tuesday. Futures in Japan and Australia traded higher while Hong Kong declined. Golden Dragon China index fell 1.16%. Japan ADRs mostly advanced. US contracts higher after a mixed cash session on the heels of Friday's rally. Tech leads were notably positive amid AI optimism. Nvidia (NVDA) extended gains and semis/semicaps rallied. SOX index was up 2.84%. Treasuries mostly weaker with the curve steepening. Dollar index down 0.6% though off worst levels after Trump tariff report denial. Gold finished down 0.3%. Bitcoin futures up 3.7%. WTI crude ended down 0.5%.
Global sentiment was supported by a Washington Post article indicating Trump could dial back his Tariff plan by focusing on critical imports, though he later said report was wrong. US strength led by tech with AI secular growth theme in focus ahead of Nvidia CEO Huang CES keynote, recent Microsoft (MSFT) capex update and OpenAI highlights. However, higher US yields amid prospects for slower Fed rate cuts and reinforced by latest hawkish-leaning Fedspeak viewed as an X-factor for equities helping to explain relative underperformance in the Dow index.
Asia attention also on Las Vegas CES for positive tech catalysts. South Korea market buoyed by recent Microsoft announcement of $80B spending on AI data centers. Microsoft also entered into AI partnership with LG Electronics (066570.KS). Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) unveiled a strategy to broaden application of AI. However, US-China frictions continued as US Defense Department identified China tech giants including Tencent (700.HK) and CATL (300750.CH) as firms working with Chinese military. Both companies argued the designation was a mistake and denied any military activities. Tencent said there would be no impact on business.
Elsewhere, Japan headlines dominated by US President Biden's decision to block Nippon Steel's (5401.JP) acquisition of US Steel (X). Both firms filed a lawsuit against the administration, challenging the objectivity of the CFIUS review. Separate civil suit filed against Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF) and USW, alleging anticompetitive activities to block the deal. Attention turns to Nippon Steel's news conference today. Macro calendar light on events; next notable data release will be Australia monthly CPI due Wednesday.
