  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Friday trade with futures signaling opening gains in Japan and Australia trading higher. US contracts flat in post-market trade though latest afterhours tech earnings positively received. Australian bonds little changed after Treasuries firmed overnight. Dollar saw strongest gains vs Canadian dollar and Mexico peso following Trump tariff comments though has since pulled back. Crude rebounding from near one-month low. Gold steady near record high. Bitcoin flat.

    • Markets processing latest tariff headlines after Trump said 25% tariffs will be imposed on Canada and Mexico from Saturday, and that China will also be targeted with 10%. Still some uncertainty whether tariffs will go ahead, or Trump pulls back at last minute like he did with Colombia. Press sources left open possibility of Canada and Mexico tariffs being averted or scaled back depending on whether Trump's demands are met. Trump this week also flagged universal tariffs "much higher" than 2.5%, targeting select commodities mostly.

    • AAPL +3% in with bottom line beat. iPhone sales missed though services revenue up 13%. China again a drag with revenue there falling by larger-than-forecast 11%. INTC +4% revenue beat though guidance underwhelmed amid demand uncertainty. Also no update on CEO search. Elsewhere, latest press sources note OpenAI in talks to raise as much as $40B at valuation of $260B, well up on $157B valued in October. SoftBank reported to be leading funding round with $15-25B that would make it OpenAI's biggest backer.
