Feb 04 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities poised to open higher Wednesday. Futures in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia traded firmer. Golden Dragon China index rebounded 2.65%, Japan ADRs skewed to the upside. US contracts retreating after a firmer cash session ended near best levels, largely erasing Monday's losses. Tech leads positive after all Mag 7 posted gains, broader big tech mostly higher, and SOX index up 1.05%. Treasuries were firmer with curve steepening after the bearish flattening move on Monday. Dollar was weaker across the board; loonie higher, Mexican peso lower. Gold was up 0.7%, ended at a fresh record close. Bitcoin futures were down 2.5%. WTI crude settled down 0.6%, but off worst levels on Trump reinstating "maximum pressure" policy on Iran.

    • Markets overnight followed Asia momentum yesterday after the tariff postponement for Mexico and Canada. Rapid turnaround reinforced the idea that President Trump is using tariffs as a negotiating tool and may prove temporary. Meanwhile, China's tariff response was viewed as symbolic, also reaffirming views that Beijing is seeking a deal. But situation remains fluid. Scheduled phone conference between Trump and Xi did not happen Tuesday. White House indicated they would speak in the next couple of days, though Trump said he is in no hurry while shrugging off Beijing's reciprocal tariffs. China tariffs take effect Monday, providing some time for dialogue to start.

    • Other regional developments in the backburner amid heightened focus on tariff developments. Japan PM Ishiba heading to Washington Thursday for talks with Trump, though no clear expectations. Attention otherwise on corporate earnings, so far tracking positive overall, though latest post-close results were somewhat mixed. On macro, Japan wages notably beat on the back of large bonuses. South Korea CPI inflation returned to the 2% range for the first time since August. New Zealand Q4 jobless rate was steady as expected. China Caixin services PMI projected to remain steady, reaffirming relative strength over manufacturing sector.
