StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.45%, Hang Seng Futures +0.90%, ASX SPI 200 +0.18%, S&P Futures +0.12%

Feb 12 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan and Hong Kong, while Australia little changed in initial trade. US contracts flat in postmarket trade after clawing back losses that followed hot US CPI data. Australian bonds under pressure, tracking earlier Treasury curve bear flattening. Dollar saw broad-based strength with yen down to one-week low. Crude extending overnight sell-off while gold flat. Bitcoin flat after rebounding from one-week low.

    • Hotter-than-expected US January CPI added to signs disinflation momentum has stalled with core holding above 3%. In response markets pushed out expected Fed rate cut to December from September. At his House testimony, Fed Chair Powell said data shows more work to do on inflation, necessitating need to keep policy settings restrictive. Data also comes at a time of heightened concerns upside risks to inflation from Trump tariffs with Powell reiterating there are uncertainties around impact of government policies.

    • Markets on watch for President Trump's announcement on reciprocal tariffs after he said order will come by Thursday. Still a lot of unknowns, including extent to which it raises effective US tariff rate and breath of industries it will impact. Some hope Trump will exempt major imports with House Speaker Johnson saying he believed president is weighing carve-outs for autos and pharmaceuticals (though recall Trump has also flagged product-specific tariffs on these and other items).

    • Asia viewed as particularly vulnerable to Trump's reciprocal tariffs, India among those with greatest tariff differentials with US. PM Modi set to meet with Trump at White House on Thursday where he is expected to lay out his case in pointing to recent efforts by India such as reduced import duties. However, White House Press Secretary Leavitt said reciprocal tariffs may come before Modi arrives. Sentiment remains downbeat on Indian markets with Nifty 500 down 3% week-to-date to lowest since Jun-2024.
