Feb 13 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Friday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Hong Kong while Japan tracking for flat open. ASX advancing in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat after US indexes rebounded on Thursday. Australian bonds rallying after Treasury yields swung lower following dovish market takeaways from US PPI. Crude and gold up slightly from overnight close. Dollar firming against yen following broad pullback on Thursday. Bitcoin remains rangebound.

    • Trump made widely anticipated announcement on reciprocal tariffs though was absence of details and delayed implementation spun as positives. Implementation delay viewed as a signal there is room for negotiations and Trump said tariffs can be avoided if other countries drop theirs. While announcement was welcomed by markets, Trump also said not to expect exemptions, and he reiterated plans to impose additive tariffs on autos, pharma and chips.

    • Trump met with India PM Modi at White House on Thursday with two leaders discussing range of trade issues, including Indian purchases of US energy and defense equipment as part of broader efforts towards bilateral trade deal. Talks come at a crucial time for India, which is particularly vulnerable to reciprocal tariffs given it has among highest differentials with US. Indian stocks have underperformed recently with Nifty 500 down 3% week-to-date.

    • Mixed takeaways from US January PPI. While core measure was in-line and annualized core topped consensus, components that feed into Fed's preferred PCE were more subdued, leading economists to revise down their January PCE estimates. Markets brought forward timing of expected Fed rate cut to September from December a day earlier after hotter CPI data drove a hawkish repricing of the rate path.

    • In corporate developments, Honda (7267.JP) and Nissan (7201.JP) confirmed decision to terminate merger talks. Bloomberg sources said KKR considering investment in Nissan. Alibaba (9988.HK) confirmed it will provide AI technology for AAPL iPhones in China, coming as stock continues to hit new record highs. Sources also told The Information Apple continuing to work with Baidu (9888.HK) on AI features for its China iPhones.
