Feb 25 ,2025
Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan while Hang Seng futures tracking higher following consecutive declines. ASX lower in initial trade. US contracts gaining following a tech-led retreat on Tuesday. Australian bonds strengthening following earlier Treasury curve bull flattening. FX markets steady after yen neared Oct-2024 high against dollar. Copper rallying following latest Trump tariff threat. Crude and gold hovering near overnight lows. Bitcoin sold off to lowest since Nov-2024.
US growth concerns in focus after consumer confidence fell by most since Aug-2021 to eight month low, with tariffs a key factor as inflation expectations surged. Figures played into Trump 2.0 policy uncertainty that is weighing on sentiment. AI capex bubble concerns, TSLA selloff on European sales slowdown, and Trump administration's latest actions targeting China's chip industry among other talking points.
Markets continue to grapple with trade-related uncertainty following latest tariff developments. On Tuesday President Trump signed executive order directing Commerce Department to probe national security implications of copper imports, potentially paving way for tariffs. Order separate to 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum set to take effect mid-March. At same tine US seemingly ramping up action against China, including tightening restrictions on chip exports.
Australia January CPI forecast to show third straight increase in monthly inflation to around RBA's 2.5% target midpoint. Greater focus will be on core measure given energy subsidy distortion. Component-level data will also be scrutinized after RBA Governor Bullock emphasized importance of continued services disinflation. Consensus remains for RBA to cut again in May though board is cautious about prospects of further easing amid concerns strong economy and labor market will delay disinflation process.
