StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (0.42%), Hang Seng Futures (0.43%), ASX SPI 200 +0.44%, S&P Futures +0.08%

Feb 26 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan and Hong Kong while ASX higher in initial trade. US contracts unchanged afterhours with NVDA flat following earnings. Australian bonds rallying following latest Treasury curve bull flattening. Canadian dollar and Mexican peso saw knee-jerk gains after Trump flagged another tariff delay, dollar steady elsewhere. Crude up slightly from lows while gold flat and copper steady following earlier rally on Trump tariff threat.

    • NVDA Q4 sales and Q1 guidance both ahead of expectations though revenue and profit growth continued to decelerate, and magnitude of the beat was smaller than previous quarters. Group talked up Blackwell demand and tamped down concerns around production. GM guidance came in soft though anticipates recovery once production fully ramped up. Referencing DeepSeek, expects demand for its chips to remain strong amid AI shift from training to reasoning.

    • Late Wednesday Bloomberg sources reported Beijing intends to begin recapitalizing major banks, Agricultural Bank of China (1288.HK), Bank of Communications (3328.HK) and Postal Savings Bank of China (1658.HK), with injection of at least CNY400B ($55B). Authorities had flagged bank recapitalization plans in 2024 with Bloomberg sources earlier noting up to CNY1T could be injected. Move aimed at shoring up bank balance sheets amid low margin environment, aiding their ability to extend loans and boost economy.

    • Tariff headlines remain volatile after President Trump repeated Canada and Mexico tariffs will proceed with 2-Apr start date, which seemed to contradict proposed early March date. Added that US will also impose 25% tariffs on EU, singling out autos. However, Trump softened his rhetoric on China, refuting reports about investment and curbs and saying he'd welcome Chinese investment in US. Trump also refused to commit to protecting Taiwan from an invasion.
