Synopsis:
Asian markets set for negative start to Friday trade. Futures signaling sharp opening decline in Japan while Hang Seng futures little changed. ASX weaker in initial trade. US contracts edging higher following Thursday's tech-led retreat. Australian bonds little changed following earlier Treasury curve steepening. Crude drifting lower following Thursday rally amid reports OPEC+ cautious about hiking output in April. Gold and copper adding to declines. Bitcoin trading just above mid-November lows.
Trump ramped up tariff threat on Thursday, saying Canada and Mexico tariffs will proceed as scheduled on 4-Mar, blaming insufficient efforts to stem flow of fentanyl. Trump's timeline cleared up confusion after he suggested Wednesday early April start date for the tariffs. Trump also revealed China tariff will rise from 10% to 20%. Tariff remarks attributed for late afternoon risk off move on markets though still some hope for last-minute reprieve after White House official said discussions between countries ongoing.
Negative leads for Asia from US tech selloff on Thursday with NVDA down 9% to five-month low following 'good, but not great', earnings. SOX fell 6% while Nasdaq dropped to lowest since Nov-2024. Trump policy uncertainty compounded market jitters following latest tariff threat, further denting US exceptionalism trade. Bearish sentiment also rose sharply. Market awaiting US PCE index later Friday amid forecasts for a y/y slowdown in core inflation, coming as Fed officials continues to stress need for patience.
