Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan while Hang Seng futures higher. ASX lower in initial trade. S&P 500 futures gaining in postmarket trade following tariff reprieve headlines. Australian bonds under pressure, tracking earlier Treasury curve bear steepening. Dollar index down to early Nov-2024 lows, pulled back against Canadian dollar and Mexican peso following tariff remarks. Precious and base metals gaining while crude extending declines. Bitcoin fluctuating.
Markets seeing some reprieve from trade headline volatility after Commerce Secretary Lutnick flagged partial tariff relief for Canada and Mexico as soon as Wednesday. Lutnick said he believes Trump will work out a longer-term compromise with tariffs on goods covered by USMCA likely settling "somewhere in the middle." Latest twist follows ramp in trade war concerns after Canada, Mexico and China announced plans to retaliate against Trump's tariffs.
Few key events coming up. Ukraine, trade war, and domestic policy agenda among focus areas in President Trump's address to Congress at 21:00 ET. BOJ Governor Ueda to deliver opening remarks at IMF event. Earlier RBA Deputy Governor Hauser reiterated board doesn't share market's view on series of rate cuts. Australia Q4 GDP forecast to show growth rebounded amid support from consumption and public sector spending. China Caixin services PMI forecast to have decelerated. South Korea Q4 GDP revision in-line.
