Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling mild opening gains in Japan while Hang Seng futures flat. ASX marginally higher in initial trade. S&P 500 futures nudging higher afterhours. Australian bonds weakening, tracking earlier Treasury curve bear flattening. FX markets steady with dollar ending little changed following softer US CPI. Crude and gold unchanged after finishing higher in offshore session. Bitcoin steady after recouping earlier losses.
Stabilization on US markets tabbed to oversold conditions with previously underperforming tech/semis leading the rebound (SOX up 2.5%). Still, sentiment remains cautious amid Trump policy uncertainty and tariff headline volatility, keeping S&P 500 on cusp of correction territory. Softer US CPI data also not enough to sway expectations of a Fed hold next week (markets still pricing in three rate cuts by end-2025).
US February CPI notably cooler than expected with core inflation lowest in almost four years, helping to ease recent concerns around stalling disinflation momentum. Still, data considered somewhat dated in context of fears tariffs will add upward pressure on inflation going forward. Focus turns to US PPI later Thursday, forecast to show unchanged core on m/m basis. Additional focus will be on PCE categories after component-level takeaways from CPI data noted some upside implications.
President Trump threatened to respond to EU and Canada's retaliatory tariffs on US goods. Their moves in response to US steel and aluminum tariffs that went into effect Wednesday. Attention moving ahead to expected announcement on reciprocal tariffs on 2-Apr, as trade war risks continue to drive fears about slowing economic growth. Strategists also voicing more concerns lately about downward revisions to earnings expectations and year-end index price targets.
