  • Synopsis

    • European equity markets are set for a positive open. Asia equities mixed Wednesday. Some solid gains in South Korea, Taiwan and Japan as semis and batter-related stocks rally. Greater China mixed with Hang Seng lower and mainland benchmarks mostly higher. Heavy losses on ASX after Trump imposed tariffs on Australian steel imports. India lower, Southeast Asia mixed. US futures higher.

    • More tariff-induced turbulence overnight. President Trump threatened to double levies on Canada to 50% though later backed off that stance. Tariffs of 25% on steel/aluminum products went into effect at midnight US time with no exemptions as indicated by the White House Tuesday. S&P 500 fell 10% from its prior peak. The European Commission has launched swift and proportionate countermeasures on US steel and aluminum imports into the EU. In total, the EU countermeasures could apply to US goods exports worth up to €26B, matching the economic scope of the US tariffs.

    • In central banks, ECB and Its Watchers conf, speakers include ECB's Lagarde at 9:45CET, whilst panels are chaired by Bank of France's Villeroy 10:15, Bank of Spain's Escrivá 13:00 and Bundesbank's Nagel 14:45, with ECB's Lane delivers closing remarks at 16:15. Poland interest rate decision. Bank of Lithuania releases its latest economic forecast, governor Simkus speech. Bank of Portugal's Centeno speaks at a conf. on banking. Bank of Italy's Panetta speech in Rome.

    • Chancellor Scholz hosts President of the European Council, António Costa, at 12noon CET, joint press conf scheduled, and then speaks at event hosted by Friedrich Ebert Foundation in the afternoon. OPEC Monthly Report is due for release. In UK, after MPs questions on Wales there's weekly PMQs at 12noon GMT and the Employment Rights Bill continues its passage through parliament. Committee topics include reforming the water sector (9:30, execs from Wessex Water (4677.MK)), Nitrogen (10:00), the UK's future relationship with the US (10:30) and unlocking community energy at scale (15:00). US President Trump will host Ireland's Taoiseach Micheál Martin. EU's Competitiveness Council (Internal market and industry) meeting. EU's Kubilius attends the ministerial meeting of E5 format and participates at the Paris Forum on Strategy and Defence. There's the Circular Valley Convention 2025.

    • On the macro front, Spain Jan retail sales and Portugal Feb final CPI are due.

    • In earnings, DACHs region names kicked off the session with Porsche (P911.GR) reporting final FY EPS €3.94 vs FactSet €4.30 and confirms FY25 outlook. Puma (PUM.GR) guides Q1 adjusted EBIT around €70M vs FactSet €212.7M and Rheinmetall (RHM.GR) reports FY operating result €1.48B vs FactSet €1.43B. Avolta (AVOL.SW) and Tecan Group (TECN.SW) also out with reports. Elsewhere, Inditex (ITX.SM) is out with FY net income attributable €5.87B vs FactSet €5.86B, raised dividend +9% y/y, guides 2025. Basic-Fit (BFIT.NA) reported FY results and Leonardo (LDO.IM) issued FY shortly before the close yesterday and provided Industrial Plan update for the period 2025-29
