Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Futures signaling small opening decline in Japan and mildly positive start in Hong Kong. ASX lower in initial trade. US contracts advancing following latest tariff headlines. Australian bond yields higher at the long end after Treasury curve steepened on Friday. Dollar touch higher against yen, weaker elsewhere. Crude flat after capping second straight weekly gain. Gold steady near $3K. Bitcoin gaining towards early March highs.
Bloomberg sources noted Trump's reciprocal tariff announcement may be less severe than thought with certain countries exempted. Trump also set to forego same day announcement on sectoral tariffs while officials flagged prospect of permanent reprieve from 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico. In other trade news, GOP Senator Daines said fentanyl issue needs resolution before US-China talks on tariffs and non-tariff barriers. Press sources noted China weighing voluntarily limiting exports in certain sectors to allay US criticism over its subsidy policy.
US-Asia market divergence reversed a little last week after dovish FOMC takeaways lifted sentiment towards stocks and bonds. Meanwhile China market pullback was led by technology following pickup in discussion about valuations. Still no change to overarching narrative of waning American exceptionalism - tariffs continue to fuel US macro uncertainty while Europe's defense/infrastructure pivot and China's narrowing of tech gap with US encouraging rebound of global flows.
Relatively quieter week on economic calendar with global flash PMIs (Mon) to offer latest read on economic impact of tariffs. Tokyo CPI (Fri) forecast to show unchanged core inflation amid upside pressures from surge in rice prices. US PCE index (Fri) expected to show unchanged core inflation. BOJ Summary of Opinions (Fri), Japan trade data (Fri), services PPI (Wed) and Australian monthly CPI (Wed) among handful of other economic releases. Cost of living support expected to feature in Australian budget (Tues).
